Imagine combining a social networking site with the Sims and you're on your way to understanding Second Life (SL). To call it a role-playing game isn't quite accurate because SL can be so many things to so many different people. Role-playing IS one option, but there are so many other things you can do there.

As you can already see, SL has its detractors - people who say SL is just a place for losers with no real life - but in my experience, the people who shout loudest about SL being for losers are the real losers. Unless you have social skills, you're not going to get far in SL, because social interaction is really the main point of SL. In real life, if you are disabled or have an illness that is obvious, people make prior assumptions about you. In SL your first point of contact is your avatar. Those real-life assumptions go out of the window. Age, color, race, disability and even sex can be rendered immaterial in SL - it's the personality of the individual that has to make the effort. If you don't have social skills or you are negative about everything, you won't get far in SL.

As someone else has pointed out (and I have touched on), SL is a great place for people with disabilities or severe illnesses. It's also a great place for older people who have responsibilities that prevent them from undertaking real-life activities. By the time most people are in their 30s, they have a job and children to care for. Going out and living it up is no longer an option, but you can have an active social life in SL.

Your avatar is your representative in the 3D world of SL. It can be as realistic or as fantastical as you choose. Mine is very realistic for the most part, but I have one friend whose avatar is like an animated piece of cubic art. You'll also find people there as faeries, vampires, elves, animals, furries, angels, demons and just about anything else you can think of.

What you do is up to you. Some people use SL to meet people and chat. Others want to be part of role-playing groups. Many universities around the world have locations in SL and offer supplementary classes. You can explore the many regions of SL; go to clubs where you can dance to DJs or live musicians streaming music into SL (I DJ in SL); visit shops and malls and buy clothes, skin, hair, shoes and even vehicles and animals to use in the virtual world, or if you learn how to create things, you can set up a store and sell your products.

The UK band Duran Duran are huge Second Life fans and own several regions in SL. Here, the band perform concerts in their avatar forms or DJ their favorite music, or you can simply sit and chat with them. Amy Lee of Evanescence and UK singer Kate Nash also have avatars in SL (although I have never encountered either of them) and Yoko Ono has displayed virtual art in SL.

One of the most amazing things in SL is Relay For Life of Second Life. So far this year, RFL of SL has raised $375,341 for the American Cancer Society. There are far too many RFL events going on in SL each year to describe them all, but it culminates in a huge weekend get-together where RFL of SL takes over about 45 regions in SL and builds a road through it all for people to 'walk' just as people do in real life RFL. It takes over 2 hours to walk the course with your avatar. Cancer sufferers, survivors, and their caregivers get pride of place at this event and we all remember our families and friends who lost their fight against cancer. Each team will build attractions in their area, so it's like a huge theme park.
